Why “good for” and not a summary
A textbook is a tool, and the useful note is which chapter to open when a particular problem appears. A summary of a 600-page book is either useless or a second book.
Editions
Record the edition and the printing. Page and equation numbers move between editions, and a citation to “chapter 7, equation 3” resolves to different mathematics in different printings.
