Synthesis
ActiveReading produces notes; synthesis produces an argument. This is where the notes stop being a list and start being the case for the thesis.
Themes
The recurring commitments and disputes across the literature.
Research gapsWhat is not known, stated precisely enough to be attacked.
Competing theoriesRival accounts, what distinguishes them and what would decide between them.
Literature mapThe field as a diagram: who builds on whom, and where the argument branches.
The test
Chapter 02 of the thesis is a rewriting of these four pages for an external reader. If the gap stated here cannot be defended from the papers noted in this section, the gap is wrong, not the papers.
