Notes

Active

The working surface. Everything here is provisional, dated, and written for one reader. Material graduates out of this section into a project, a chapter or a literature note once it is coherent; it does not graduate by being tidied in place.

The rule about dates

Every note is dated YYYY-MM-DD in its filename and its heading. A research journal whose entries cannot be ordered is a pile, and a pile cannot show that a hypothesis was written before the run that tested it.

The rule about editing

Journal entries and meeting notes are not edited after the day they were written. If something turns out to be wrong, a later entry says so. Editing the past makes the record useless for exactly the purpose it exists to serve.
